About GUK Summer Academy 2024:
This year, 40 10th and 11th graders from GEAR UP Kentucky's 12 districts will be selected among qualified applicants to attend the FREE GUK Summer Academy, where they will:
- Spend 3 weeks (July 7-26, 2024) on the Northern Kentucky University campus (coming home on weekends)
- Earn 3 college credit hours taking one of two available courses (LDR 180 - Leading Social and Cultural Change or ENG 213 - Global Viewpoints in English)
- Make new friends
- Have lots of fun
At the Summer Academy, students will take one of these two college-level courses, enabling them to earn three college credit hours for free:
- LDR 180 - Leading Social and Cultural Change
Students completing this course will examine foundational theories and practices of leadership used to bring about social and cultural change. Viewed through historical and contemporary lenses, students will be introduced to common threads and unique differences of the leadership process involved in social and cultural change on local, national, and global levels. Students will a) compare cultures from historical, local, national, or global perspectives; b) demonstrate how literature, the arts, and/or artifacts reflect and influence culture; and c) demonstrate an understanding of the factors that influence global issues. - ENG 213 - Global Viewpoints in Literature
Students completing this course will develop skills in intercultural competency, improve as thinkers and writers, and understand themselves through stories, poetry, plays and films. Students in this course will have conversations about pressing issues of global importance; discover both common ground and important differences among English speakers around the world; engage with course reading creatively using social media, podcasts, and vlogs; and complete a final project that reflects the intellectual itineraries of the course.
