The federal GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) program provides seven-year grants for states and partnerships to provide resources and services at middle and high schools with low-income student populations. The GEAR UP program is dedicated to developing a college-going culture by working with students, parents, school staff, and the greater school community.

The Council on Postsecondary Education  has administered Kentucky’s state GEAR UP grant since 2000. In anticipation of our current grant coming to an end this fall, we collected input from students, parents, schools, and college access professionals across Kentucky in order to redefine what GEAR UP means in Kentucky and how GEAR UP services and resources can best support college and career readiness efforts for districts and students. We proudly submitted our proposal in April 2017 and expect funding notification in early fall 2017.

Ultimately, GEAR UP Kentucky expects to serve 10,000 students at 10 districts (middle schools and corresponding high schools) across the state.
